“I appeal to them not to force Kashmiri youths to take up gun again,” : Yasin Malik

SRINAGAR: Inspired by chief minister Omar Abdullah’s tweet and independent legislator Abdul Rashid Sheikh seeking clemency for Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, former commander of JKLF outfit Yasin Malik held protest demonstration at Lal chowk here on Friday afternoon.

The former militant leader on Thursday had announced to step-up the campaign against hanging of Guru.

Sensing marginalization in the political field, Kashmiri separatist leaders have been putting their weight behind Abdullah who initiated the move to garner support for Guru through tweets and by statements on the private TV channels expressing reservations about the Supreme Court verdict against the convict.

Raising slogans for clemency to Afzal Guru, Malik along with his two dozen supporters took out procession from his residence at Maisuma Bazar after Friday prayers and was rounded up by the police near Hotel Taj at Budshah Chowk.

He said the entire JKLF leadership is pained at the “high drama” enacted in the state assembly on Wednesday which resulted in lapsing of the clemency resolution.

“Government of India will be setting Kashmir on fire if Afzal Guru is hanged. They hanged the founder of freedom struggle Shaheed Maqbool Bhat. The result was that Kashmiris took up the gun and Bhat was reborn in every home,” Malik said.

“I appeal to them not to force Kashmiri youths to take up gun again,” Malik said.

“The chargesheet filed in the Parliament attack case clearly mentions that Afzal Guru was not involved in the conspiracy or in the execution of the attack. But he only provided logistic support. Do they want to hang Afzal Guru for electoral gains?” Malik asked.
