PANAJI: The Goa University (GU) students council elections on Monday were swept with an overwhelming majority by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) students’ wing, amidst allegations by the National Students Union of India (NSUI) of manipulation of the election process.

The elections saw much drama with a morcha by NSUI students, their arrest and celebrations of the election win by BJP students. The Agacaim police arrested 14 NSUI leaders for forcibly trying to enter the vice-chancellor’s cabin. They were later released on bail.

“We had gone to the vice-chancellor to bring to his notice that the university officials have not acted on our complaint of manipulation of the election procedure. We wanted to take to his cabin our candidates who were wrongfully disqualified by the director for students’ welfare, who conducts the elections. But we were not allowed in and instead the police were called to arrest us,” NSUI Goa president, Sunil Kawthankar, said.

Kawthankar said that the NSUI will now take the matter to the chancellor and demand the resignation of GU’s vice-chancellor, Dileep Deobagkar. “We doubt his integrity. Last year, when the BJP students alleged manipulation in the elections, the elections were pushed forward for a very minor reason. This year, when we have pointed out genuine discrepancies, the VC has failed to act. We were in turn arrested,” Kawthankar said.

Kawthankar said that arrest of the NSUI students and the ensuing confusion led to their defeat s as several students were unable to vote. On the other hand, the BJP panel rejoiced in the university campus after retaining their seats in the students’ council .
