Modi Seeks Country-Wide Protection of Cows

In National on February 5, 2012 at 4:07 pm

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today sought country-wide protection of cow progeny and a ban on its slaughter.

“People should press Central government for enacting a law for the protection of cow progeny and particularly for banning ferrying of cow-beef in railways,” Modi said, while speaking at an event at Rangpur in Gandhinagar.

“Gujarat is the only state which has enacted a law for the protection of cow progeny,” he stated.

The Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act 2011, imposes complete ban on cow-slaughter, transportation and selling of cow-beef. It came into force from October last year.

As per the Act those involved in cow-slaughter and related activities will be subjected to imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine of Rs 50,000.
